Take Control Viewer - SolarWinds

The Windows, Linux and Mac Computers (SolarWinds) Viewer is used to connect to devices running the SolarWinds version of Take Control and contains three panes.

Please be aware that the following options may vary depending on the Take Control Policy applied to the target device as well as the its Operating System type and version.

The viewer supported keyboard shortcuts are listed in the Keyboard Shortcuts section.

General

Quick Dashboard

View hardware information for the remote device: OS, CPU, RAM, Network, Disk Space

Chat

Initiate a chat conversation with the remote computer's end user. To allow the conversation to continue, the chat window becomes undocked when in the Remote Desktop or File Transfer sections.
   

Remote Desktop

Computer

Emergency Reboot

This option immediately restarts the remote computer, forcefully terminating all programs and the Operating System as quickly as possible.

Warning: as forcing a shutdown may potentially damage any open files this option is regarded as a last resort.

User RDP

Where configured on the remote device, you can use Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) as opposed to Take Control.

The Take Control Remote Desktop tab on the viewer is disabled whilst the RDP Client is open.

Port Forward

Forwards the TCP traffic from a local port to a port on the remote computer inside the Take Control session.

View

Size

Change the size of the image of the remote computers desktop in the session window.

Color

Changing the color mode for the session may improve the connections performance.

Choose connection's level of visual fidelity

Optimize for

Align the connection with the available bandwidth

Change TS Session

By default, the Agent will remotely control the local Terminal Services (TS) session on a computer. If the computer is a Terminal Server with several concurrent users, this feature will allow the cycling through different TS sessions. Take Control can only control active sessions (a user has to be interacting with the TS session, it’s not enough just to be logged on).

Change the screen resolution on the remote computer

Allows the technician to view the remote mouse cursor

View Only

Limits the ability to perform action on the remote device to those options available in the Commands menu

Full Screen

Maximizes the window hiding the header and footer sections of the viewer.

Refresh Image

Refreshes the screen

Monitors

Lists all monitors available on the remote device, left click to select a monitor and right-click to cycle between them.

Monitors are also selectable via the Open Monitors Window button open_monitorsin the viewer's top bar.

Take Control (SolarWinds) Viewer 6.80.17, introduced detection and support for ultra-high resolution displays on the remote devices.

Commands

Send CTRL+ALT+DEL

Sends the CTRL+ALT+DEL command to the remote computer.

Operating System Commands

Depending on the Operating System type and version various options are available. For example, when connected to a remote computer running Windows 8 or later and includes the option to open the Start Menu, Charms Bar , Power User Menu, Search Bar , Devices Bar or Settings Bar.

Block Remote Keyboard and Mouse

Disables the physical keyboard and mouse of the remote computer. For security, the remote user can cancel this command by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL

Blank Screen

Used to protect the confidentiality of any actions performed by the technician, this is used to display a blank screen to the remote user. This setting is inadvisable on CRT monitors.

Lock Remote Operating System

Locks the remote Windows session.

Interactions

Laser Pointer

The technician's mouse movement is reproduced as a colored dot on the remote computer, different colors are displayed depending on the mouse action (normal, left-click, middle-click, right-click).

Start/Stop Recording Video

Used to begin or stop the recording of a session. The sessions are recorded in an FLV format and stored in the FLV folder under the viewer's installation folder.

Video Storage Location

Select where your session recordings are stored:

  • Default - use the standard location
  • Custom - navigate to and select the target folder in the Folder Selection dialog

Enable Keyboard Mapping

Send keyboard events using the Unicode value of the key pressed.

Save a screenshot of the current remote screen as a JPG

Copy / Paste

Get Remote Clipboard - copies the content of the remote to local clipboard. Text only

Send  Local Clipboard - copies the content of the local to remote clipboard. Text only

Insert Copied Password - paste a password into the password field on a locked Microsoft or Apple device

Note: please be aware that only text copied during the session is available for pasting. Any text copied before the session was established is unavailable.

Shared Clipboard

Disabled - no clipboard sharing between devices

Local to Remote - share the clipboard of the local device with you

Remote to Local - share your clipboard with the local device

Bidirectional - allowing sharing between both devices

Save Current Setting as Default - apply the current setting going forward

Enable Remote Printing

Redirect a remote printing job to a local printer on the technician’s machine

 

File Transfer

Local File Set / Remote File Set

Quickly and easily transfer files between the connected computers.

Navigate to the directory to retrieve the file from and the corresponding destination to transfer the file to, then simply drag and drop the required files between locations.

Only text copied during the session is available for pasting. Any text copied before the session was established is unavailable.

Take Control Tips

Drag & Drop to remote device desktop

To transfer your files to the remote device's desktop, simply drag the files from your local machine to the target window. Regardless of the folder open in the target window at the time this will transfer the files to the remote device's desktop. Use the options available from the File Transfer tab to transfer the files directly to a specific location.

Please note that you must use the File Transfer tab options to retrieve files from the remote device.

Increase available screen size

One suggestion to increase the amount of space on the screen is to automatically hide the menu options when in the Remote Desktop tab (including the gray bar at the top of the screen).

Simply right-click in the gray bar and choose Autohide from the returned options, to subsequent display the menu options just hover over the top or bottom of the screen. Please note that the hover time is 1 second.

When using this Autohide option in conjunction with View -> Size -> Always fit to Window the remote session becomes quite a different experience.
