Create Custom Role

The Dashboard contains a number of default System Roles based on the standard permissions required for a user of that type to accomplish their assigned tasks. As not all users will fall into these pre-defined categories we have included the option to create and subsequently define custom roles.  For example creating functional roles such as feature specialist or advanced administrator.

Custom roles are created in the Roles and Permissions dialog and are based on either a System Role (Add Role) or custom role (Clone Role) which acts as the permissions template.

Regardless of the method used to create the new role, Add Role or Clone Role, once the role is created its permissions may be tweaked in the right panel.

Add Role

To create a custom role using a System Role as the template click Add Role above the left panel. This adds a new row in the roles panel with the following configurable fields.

Name

Click within the blank Name field and enter the name the role will appear under in both the Roles and Permissions and Users dialogs.

Based on

Rather than configure each permission individually, a System Role is selected from the Based on drop-down and acts as a permissions template.

Choose the System Role which most closely reflects the permissions requirements for the newly added role with four System Roles available from the Based on drop-down to choose from:

Superuser

Standard

Administrator

Client

Clone Role

The Based on drop-down contains a list of the System Roles, but there may be times where an existing custom role may make a more appropriate permissions template and this is where the Clone Role function is used.

Select the parent custom role in the left panel then click Clone Role to create a duplicate role.

Name

To differentiate the clone from the parent it is named Clone Parent role (editable in the Name field)

Based on

References the System Role the parent (or indeed the parent’s parent) was Based on.

Important, please be aware that any changes to the Based on role will change the default permissions associated with the cloned role.

Where a role is currently in use, any permission based changes are applied the next time the user logs in.
