Remote Monitoring & Management Help

Microsoft Windows Phone 8.1 Apps

Unlike Apple iOS and Google Android, which use a single client for communication, Microsoft Windows Phone 8.1^ utilizes both a MDM client built into the Operating System and app which runs as a background task.

The built-in client is responsible for configuring the email, passcode policies, device restrictions, remote and providing some device information whilst the app provides those indicators not available from the client including the device location, battery level, RAM, timezone as well as some additional information.

Background Task

When opening the app the background task is automatically added - Step 2 of Microsoft Windows Phone 8.1 provisioning - this task runs approximately every thirty minutes and uploads data based on the hourly or daily check schedule.

Please be aware that the Operating System will attempt to schedule multiple background tasks to run together, so the MobileGuardian may not always run exactly on thirty minutes.

To check whether the background task was successfully added to the device, go to the apps tray, BatterySaver, MobileGuardian. If the options to enable or disablebackground data are displayed then the task was created. Where these options are not available just open the MobileGuardian app to generate.

Background Task Expiry

To prevent apps that are not regularly opened consuming data and battery their associated background tasks automatically expire after two weeks.

As this counter mechanism can affect the MobileGuardian app, where the expiration is within the next two days a notification is displayed locally to the user every time the background task runs and once the message is clicked the MobileGuardian app is opened and the counter reset.

If the task expires, for example the phone was switched off, the MobileGuardian app must be manually opened to re-configure the background task.

Power Saving Mode

To conserve power background tasks do not run when power saving mode is active on the phone, indicated by a heart on the battery icon.

As not all tasks should be stopped when in this mode there is the option to Allow this app to run in the background even when Battery Saver is on which can be accessed from the apps tray, BatterySaver, MobileGuardian.

Extend the Background Task

To avoid manually opening the app or clicking on the notification every two weeks the MobileGuardian app can be pinned to the start screen, this has the effect of updating the tile every time the background task runs and extending its life.

MobileGuardian is added to the start screen from the app trayhold down the MobileGuardian app then select pin to start.
