Backup Check

The Backup Check queries your client’s backup on the days specified to determine the status of the backup, ensuring that in the event of any problems on the client’s server there is a backup to restore from. Depending upon the product the backup information is derived either from the Windows Event Log or from the product's native log files.

Our users use this to...

Backup Checks typically fall into the 'every-unit-items' that our users deploy to cut their costs. The cost of a backup check is far outweighed by the cost of a lost Client if a backup disaster happens so our users usually use this as a 'baseline' check and deploy it across their base.

Dashboard Check configuration

Add

  1. Select the workstation in the north pane of the Dashboard
  2. Go to the Checks tab
  3. Click Add Check
  4. Choose Add DSC > Backup Check
    1. Select the Supported backup product from the drop-down

    2. Choose Which Backups?* (days) are to be monitored
    3. Enable any additional pass conditions, for example Show 'backup operation incomplete' as successful.**
    4. Enter the Number of backup jobs to check for***
  5. OK to save and apply

Edit

  1. Select the device in the north pane of the Dashboard
  2. Go to the Checks tab
  3. Select the target Backup Check
  4. From the Check drop-down
  5. Click Edit Check (also available from the Check's right-click menu)
  6. Configure the settings
  7. Click OK to save and apply

Delete

  1. Select the device in the north pane of the Dashboard
  2. Go to the Checks tab
  3. Select the target Backup Check
  4. From the Check drop-down
  5. Click Delete Check (also available from the Check's right-click menu)
  6. Enter the password you have logged into the Dashboard under to confirm removal
  7. Click OK to delete

Tips for Best Usage

  • Where the Check fails we would suggest checking to ensure that the backup program is installed and writing the backup status events to the relevant log file etc.
  • If the backup product is not supported, but the product writes to a log, the Log File Check may be configured to alert when a failure event is discovered or author a Script Check to retrieve the required information.

* Which Backups?

Select the days the backup is scheduled to run on.

As the backup will generally run overnight (for example starting on Monday night and finishing on Tuesday morning) the check will reflect this and run the day after the Which Backups? setting to capture any jobs that completed over the monitored period.

For example, when selecting Monday for Which Backups? the check will run on Tuesday morning to detect any Monday backup jobs that completed Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Depending on the backup program there may be an additional option to pass the check where a non-successful condition is encountered. For example, record the backup as complete with exceptions where the files were open during the job.

*** Number of backup jobs to check for

The minimum number of jobs that are scheduled to run over the monitoring period, where this minimum figure is not met the check will fail regardless of whether discovered backups were successful*

To avoid false positives or negatives when making changes to the backup set on the device, we would suggest updating the Number of jobs to check for in the Backup Check.

The below table provides examples of what will happen where the Backup Check is not updated to reflect the current number of jobs:

Daily Safety Check Run Time

Where a change to the backup schedule has occurred it may be necessary to alter when the Daily Safety Check runs to ensure this is after the backup completes.

This can be configured in the Advanced Monitoring Agent itself or on the Dashboard:

  1. Right-click on the target device (or from the Server or Workstation menu)
  2. Choose Edit Device
  3. Select the DSC Run Time from the drop-down under Check Frequency
  4. OK to save and apply
