Re-installation

If you have a Backup Manager device configured and need to re-install the backup software but wish to keep the old configuration settings such as the device name, password, security code/encryption key and the previously stored backup data, this can be done by:

  1. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Backup Manager\
  2. Take a copy of or move the config.ini file to the desktop
  3. Uninstall the Backup Manager
  4. Download and install the Backup client from SolarWinds MSP
  5. Once installed and the installation page appears in the browser, delete the new config.ini file and place the original one file back in C:\Program Files\Backup Manager\ from the desktop
  6. End the BackupFP.exe process in Task Manager and restart the internal backup process
  7. Refresh the browser page or browse in a fresh window to http://localhost:5000 to ensure the Backup Manager loads.

Reinstall old device for recovery only

In the case where you have an old (inactive) backup device which has not been deleted from the Backup Management Console, it is possible to install Backup Manager using these details to restore existing data.

Install on a device where Backup Manager is currently installed

  1. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Backup Manager\
  2. Rename the config.ini file to something like "Devicename_config.ini"
  3. This allows you to keep track of which config.ini file relates to which device name and allows you to revert the file names back easily

  4. End the BackupFP.exe process in Task Manager and restart the internal backup process
  5. Open a web browser and go to http://localhost:5000 and configure the backup using the old (inactive) backup devices details
  6. If you cannot remember your security code/encryption key, unfortunately we cannot help you as this is not stored anywhere within the system

  7. When configuring the device, you will be prompted on how you want to configure the Backup Manager. As you only want to do restores, select Restore-Only mode.
    • If this does not pop up, please do the following
      1. Stop the Backup Service Controller
      2. Open the config.ini file in notepad as administrator
      3. Under the [General] section, add "ReadOnlyMode=1" and safe the file
      4. This is case sensitive so please type carefully or copy from here and past, removing the quotation marks.

      5. Start the Backup Service Controller
  8. Once configured, you can now run the restore. When you are done, rename the current config.ini file to "Devicename_config.ini" and then rename the original one back and restart the Backup Service Controller again to continue running backups as normal.

Install on a device where Backup Manager is not installed

  1. Download and install the Backup client from SolarWinds MSP
  2. Once installed and the installation page appears in the browser, configure the backup using the old (inactive) backup devices details
  3. If you cannot remember your security code/encryption key, unfortunately we cannot help you as this is not stored anywhere within the system

  4. When configuring the device, you will be prompted on how you want to configure the Backup Manager. As you only want to do restores, select Restore-Only mode.
    • If this does not pop up, please do the following

  5. Once configured, you can now run the restore. When you are done uninstall the Backup Manager or disable restore-only mode to allow the device to backup as per the schedule.
