Increasing Logging via the N-Central UI

This article will walk you through the steps to increase the logging level of a Windows Agent or Probe using various versions of N-central. This can be required to troubleshoot more complicated issues that require you to send a copy of the Logs to the support team for further troubleshooting.

Windows Agent

  1. Login to your UI
  2. Select the appropriate customer in the navigation screen
  3. Navigate to the All Devices view.
  4. Select the device for which you'd like to increase the logging level
  5. Click on the Agent tab
  6. Click on the pull-down menu for the Log Level field, and choose 5 - Most Detail
  7. Click on the OK button at the bottom of the screen

Windows Probe

  1. Login to your UI
  2. Select the appropriate customer in the navigation screen
  3. Navigate to the All Devices view.
  4. Select the Probe for which you'd like to increase the logging level
  5. Click on the System Communication tab
  6. Click on the pull-down menu for the Log Level field, and choose 5 - Most Detail
  7. Click on the OK button at the bottom of the screen

Manually Increasing Logging by modifying the configuration files

If the Agent or Probe is unable to connect to the Central Server, then you can update the logging level manually by doing the following:

Windows Agent (N-central 7.0+)

Modify the file \Program Files\N-able Technologies\Windows Agent\config\ApplianceConfig.xml:

In the <LogLevel>...</LogLevel> section, update the value to be 5

Windows Agent (N-central 6.7)

Modify the file \Program Files\N-able Technologies\Windows Agent\agent.exe.config:

In the <LogLevel>...</LogLevel> section, update the value to be 5

Windows Agent (N-central 6.5 and older)

Modify the file \Program Files\N-able Technologies\Windows Agent\nagent.conf as follows:

In the section '[main]' ensure that loglevel=5; save and close the file

Windows Probe (N-central 7.0+)

If the Probe is unable to connect to the Central Server, then please modify the file \Program Files\N-able Technologies\Windows Software Probe\config\ApplianceConfig.xml as follows:

In the <LogLevel>...</LogLevel> section, update the value to be 5

Windows Probe (N-central 6.7)

If the Probe is unable to connect to the Central Server, then please modify the file \Program Files\N-able Technologies\Windows Software Probe\wsp.exe.config as follows:

In the <LogLevel>...</LogLevel> section, update the value to be 5

Windows Probe (N-central 6.5 and older)

Modify the file \Program Files\N-able Technolgies\Windows Software Probe\nagent.conf as follows:

In the section '[main]' ensure that loglevel=5; save and close the file
